For our group project we had to pick a certain type of project that would show another study of one of the three progressions that we did this semester. We had the option to choose from Project Space, Project Text, and Project Web. In my group, we chose to do Project Web where we had to create an interactive website that demonstrated a topic based on one of the progressions. So we created the website "Stereotypes for Dummies," where we focused on the stereotypes shown in the media. We gave examples through three tabs that relayed the stereotypes of ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. In our ethnicity tab, we talked about four major races: Caucasians, African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics. In addition, for our sexuality tab we talked about gays and lesbians.
In the ethnicity tab we talked about the stereotypes and examples for each ethnicity. For instance for our caucasian subcategory we talked about how caucasians are known to be "privileged" and Paris Hilton exemplifies this assumption. We also discussed how African Americans seem to be only known as professional athletes or rappers and how hispanics are usually maids, but these stereotypes do not define their races and not everyone is the same. In the screenshot, there is a description of Asians being the model minority and how the media portrays that stereotype as well as a visual example of a Hispanic stereotype on television.
In addition to our ethnicity tab, we also talked about gender stereotypes. We discussed how women are known to be sensitive and domestic and how men are usually the ones who work and provide for the family. We included a video on how these gender roles are created at a young age, and how it affects children's opinions.
For our last tab we discussed sexuality and how several television shows and media outlets portray lesbians and gays. Lesbians are usually known as being either "lipstick femme" or "butch" and in a relationship, there is one of each. An example of this would be Ellen, who would be known as a "butch" lesbian, and her wife, Portia, who would be known as a "lipstick femme" lesbian. In addition, gays are known as being more feminine and being into show tunes. The show Modern Family has exemplified a stereotypical gay relationship and how gays are perceived to be.
